"Independence" Day

As time goes by, I’m finding it harder and harder to be any sort of patriotic. As today is July 4th, and normally I would have the family decked out in red white and blue, the backyard decorated and the grill ready to go, I can’t help but feel embarrassed to be American. Words I never thought I would even think, let alone blog about. The state of things has me on edge. I cry as I write this. I cry for the amount of ignorance, the amount of hate, the fact that some are not even willing to listen, let alone learn. But I shortly stop myself, and reflect on a conversation I had with my bestie long before this (re)surfaced. A conversation about how our children are the light this world needs. The movers and shakers. We had children for a reason.. to leave an impact! So tonight, as the sky lights up with fireworks, I pray that the next generation of America is the change we need. I pray that things we deal with all the way up to today, is history, because we raised good humans, who recognize people of different races, sexual orientation, and gender identities, and embrace them. Who love everyone the same, who stand up for what is right, who vote, who stand on Biblical principals, but have chosen to get rid of the hypocrisy that Christianity has become. We have ‘no control of who tells our story’ after we’re gone. So make it one that is impossible to write in any negative light. I would normally end this post with “happy Independence Day” but I won’t say that until we are ALL free. Until black people are treated with the same respect that white ppl are. Until police brutality comes to an end. Until gay marriage is legal in every single state. Until ALL discrimination is GONE! That day is coming. We won’t stop fighting. My child won’t stop fighting, until America is what it should be.
