4th Freaking Grade

RKP 2018

Im still in shock that my dude is starting 4th grade. I remember 4th grade so vividly. Me and my best friend, (who is still my best friend till this day) KyLeigh, used to sing this song about our teacher. His name was Mr. Finn and we would sing “Mr. Sean Finn Finn Finn Finny Finny Fisherman” hahahahaha thats probably not funny unless its sung the way we sang it. And even then, its probably not that funny lol sorry.

aaaaanyway…

Romes is at a crucial age and it stresses me OOOOOUT!!!!! I’ve never been the type to cry when my kid goes off to school. Thats not my style. (college I’m sure will be different) But the older he gets the more I stress about what I’m doing and how it's impacting his life. Are the kids he’s hanging out with going to be good influences on him? What are they going to say about his unicorn thermos and lunchbox and his sequence binder!? Is his teacher going to pay enough attention to him? WTF is this “new math” bulls*t that they are teaching? I THOUGHT I WAS DONE WITH SCHOOL!!!!

These are all things that I’m sure every parent goes through, and I’m sure everyone has a different solution or advice, but here is mine:

YOU are ultimately your child’s teacher. YOU have the most influence on them. Who they are and how they respond to things all depends on what you teach them is ok. My son has grown up with gay and lesbian people all around him. He choses not to judge and genuinely be himself. He is beyond comfortable in who he is and is unapologetic about it. So although I, as an over protective mom, worry about kids saying something…HE doesn’t. That in itself makes me so proud and also realize that I’m doing something right. He and I have such an open, brutally honest relationship, that I can trust that if he’s not getting the attention or help from his teacher that he needs, he will tell me and trusts me to address it and fix it. He’s waaaaaaay smarter that I ever was or I ever will be and although he doesn’t like that theres NO video games on school nights, he respects it. He’s harder on himself about his grades and making straight A’s than I am on him, but I am hard on him in other ways that make his skin just tough enough to endure whatever is thrown at him. He’s pure magic and I have no doubt he’s going to kick 4th grade right in the ass, and take names while doing it!!!
